Shooting in Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court premises – suspect hospitalised

Shots were fired, on Wednesday morning, at a suspect who was brought to the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court. The Police Media Spokesperson said that an investigation is underway to locate the gunman, and that two other suspects, who were in remand custody who had fled during the commotion.

The shooting at the premises of the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court  injured  a suspect who was escorted to court by the prison officials. The suspect, 29-year-old Aruna Damith Udayanga alias Samayan is a resident from the Ranala area and was in remand custody over a homicide in Keselwatte and a shooting in Nawagamuwa.

The gunman had opened fire at the suspect at the court premises and fled the scene. Police said that a 9mm pistol was concealed in a bandaged arm and had been used to carry out the shooting.

A witness elaborating on the incident stated:

I heard a gun-shot and then I saw two persons on the ground. They were taken to the hospital in the Prisons Bus.

He added:

He arrived in the Prisons Bus and was taken away in the same bus and I saw one person there.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson of the Kaduwela Magistrate’s Court said that the incident did not hinder the court proceedings. The suspect who was injured in the shooting was admitted to the National Hospital where he continues to receive treatment under police protection.
