Addressing the 30th regular sessions of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva today (Sept 14th) UN Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein stated that he welcomes the vision shown by President Maithripala Sirisena and the commitment made by the new Government to tackle human rights issues.
He noted that the report compiled by the OHCHR (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights) following its investigation on Sri Lanka will be released on Wednesday (Sept. 16th) along with his recommendations.
The UN Human Rights Chief also noted that it is the duty of the UNHRC and the OHCHR to ensure an accountability process which produces results, decisively moves beyond the failures of the past and brings deep institutional changes needed to guarantee non-recurrence.
Addressing the 30th regular session the team from the United States stated that they will engage with the Government of Sri Lanka to develop a resolution which will assist Sri Lanka to achieve credible and meaningful accountability. The US representative also stated that they eagerly await the report on Sri Lanka and that the resolution that they hope to develop will also address the important findings of the OHCHR Investigation…
