The Attorney General’s Department informed the Court of Appeal on Monday August 31, that investigations conducted thus far into Kumaran Padmanathan alias KP, have not revealed any links to acts of terrorism.
A petition filed by JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath against KP, was taken up before the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Vijith Malalgoda, on Monday.
The petition was filed citing several respondents, including the Attorney General, the Defence Secretary, the Controller General of Immigration and Emigration, the Army Commander and Kumaran Padmanathan.
Vijitha Herath claims in his petition that KP is wanted by the Indian Police in connection with the assassination of India’s former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. In the petition, Herath has levelled several accusations at KP, including on charges pertaining to providing funding, arms and ammunition to the LTTE.
The petitioner sought that KP be arrested for these reasons and that he be prevented from leaving the country.
