President Maithripala Sirisena, speaking at an event in Kandy, announced that measures have been taken to minimise the use of polythene and ban the importation of asbestos to the country.
President Maithripala Sirisena made this disclosure during the Parisara Sathkaraka programme that was held to felicitate the students of the Kandy district who initiated measures to protect the environment.
The 12th edition of the Parisara Sathkaraka programme for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic organised by the Central Environment Authority and the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment took place on Saturday.
Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake presented a book titled Poojaniya Dhalada Sanskruthiya to the President.
A report on mangrove preservation was also handed over to the President.
