A symposium on ‘Green Technology’ was held at the University Grants Commission (UGC) on Friday.

The event was organised taking a number of aspects, such as the vital importance of incorporating green technology into the country’s development and its wide application to product and construct of technologies, into consideration.

Professor Thishan Jayasinghe from the University of Moratuwa, speaking at the event, stated:

We are talking about world class universities and all kinds of state of the art R and D. So select an area where we can all do research and if we try, to be number one in electronics. May not be that easy, but we are trying. Because recently we got to work on a 10 million rupees grant to our electronics department to buy state of the art software. We have already spent one hundred and 12 million buy one software.

He added:

One software has cost one hundred and twelve million rupees and we have already bought it. So you can see – you might – you can give a try in helping us but, in green, we can be the world leaders because others are scared of trying new solutions whereas we are not. And we have the potential to be the leader in the world because we have simple systems, bearable climate and the basic building materials – so we can be the leader.

He further stated:

We have a great potential publicity in this work and we have to help Sri Lanka to be recognised as a centre of attention for green technology applicable for tropical climates.
