Three people have been arrested, according to Austrian authorities, after the dead bodies of 71 refugees were discovered in a truck left abandoned on a motorway.
The police had stated earlier that the death toll was between 20 and 50 but since the truck discovery on Thursday, Austrian officials have revised the figure on Friday August 28.
Speaking for the Austrian police, police official Hans Peter Doskozil stated that the dead comprise of 59 men, 8 women and four children, including an infant and that it was likely that those in the truck suffocated.
The arrested include a Bulgarian national, believed to be the owner of the vehicle, a second Bulgarian national and another with Hungarian documents .
The truck was said to be travelling to Austria from Hungary and the partly decomposed bodies were piled on top of each other in a cargo container in the vehicle, parked off the highway in Burgenland state.
Hungarian authorities have been collaborating with Austrian police to lunch a cross-border hunt for the missing fourth individual believed to be Romanian and the driver of the vehicle
