On Tuesday August 25, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe visited several places of worship and obtained blessings. The Prime Minister arrived at the Sivam Kovil in Kotahena and was welcomed by a group including Ravi Karunanayake and Minister D.M. Swaminathan.
Later, the Prime Minister visited the mosque on New Moor Street, Colombo and engaged in Islamic religious observances. Subsequently, UNP candidates who were elected to parliament spoke to the media on the National Government’s future programme.
Speaking to media, General Secretary of the UNP Kabir Hashim said that they will be watching as to how flexible this opposition would be. He also said:
‘The speaker will decide as to who will be given the post of opposition leader and who is trustworthy to hold that post. The speaker can accept the opposition leader similar to accepting the prime minister.”
Speaking further, he said no matter who is in the opposition, the opposition has a responsibility, adding that they believe that a group that can carry out that task will come forward as the opposition.
