The Colombo District Conference of the National Intellectual Council took place in Colombo on Wednesday. The conference saw the participation of candidates from the United National Front and a number of intellectuals.

Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickremesinghe stated:

We mentioned about the social – economic market and we work based on that and this concept has been brought forward based on that concept.

He added:

The fundamentals of this were brought about 2500 years ago in the teachings of Lord Buddha and we can move forward from that and that is why we said we need to enter in to a Lichchavi System where the entire Parliament will become the government; and it is through that we can strengthen the civil organisations.

He further noted:

If we have the executive presidency, the prime minister system and two parties for the ten years, we need strong civil organisations and that is why we need to engage in politics with the civil society.

UNP Colombo District Candidate Patali Champika Ranawaka stated:

The collective force saw the victory being achieved on the 8th of January and our attempt is to ensure that the victory will not end on  August 17. It is imperative that a parliament that represents the president’s mandate is elected and this parliament cannot be dissolved until 2020. The President too cannot be removed until 2020 and therefore we have presented a programme that will bring a consensus among both these matters

Professor Rohan Samarajiva speaking on the occasion said:

When you speak of the manifestos of the JVP and the allianc,e I recall the vision of Kolbaya, who was the Minister of King Louis the 14th in the 17th century. That was an age-old vision and if that vision was not in effect we could have increased export and reduced imports and the state will be responsible for the people, But there is no clear answer in their manifestos as to where the funds will come from for these things.
