The remains of former rugby player Wasim Thajudeen was exhumed this morning (August 10). His remains were exhumed under the supervision of Mt. Lavinia Additional Magistrate and District Judge Praharsha Ranasinghe and Chief Judicial Medical Officer of Colombo Dr. Ajith Tennakoon.

The body of Wasim Thajudeen was laid to rest at the burial grounds of the Jumma Mosque in Dehiwala. The process of exhuming the remains commenced  at 6:30 a.m.on Monday, subsequent to the arrival of the Additional Magistrate.

According to the Colombo Chief Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Ajith Tennakoon, further investigations will be done by a team of three specialist doctors.

Wasim Thajudeen, a famous rugby player back in his school days eventually rose up the ranks to become the Captain of the National Rugby Team in 2007.

On May 27, 2012 the charred remains of Wasim Thajudeen were discovered inside a car which had reportedly crashed into a wall near the Shalika Grounds in Narahenpita. Later a wallet, suspected to belong to Thajudeen, was found in close proximity to the alleged crash site.

The CID noted at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on July 27, 2015 that since there were disparities in the reports of the judicial medical officer and the post-mortem examination, the responsible officials were questioned. Information had come to light that foul play may have been involved in Thajudeen’s death. The CID also made a request to exhume the body in order to carry out further investigations.

Following the request made by the CID, Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris ordered on August 6 that the body of national rugby player, Wasim Thajudeen be exhumed in the presence of the panel of the JMO, clerics and the Grama Niladhari Officer and also ruled that police protection be provided to the body.
