Over 500 arrested in connection to election law violations

According to the police, 558 individuals have been arrested in connection to election law violations ahead of the August 17 general elections.

Speaking on the violations, the Police Media Spokesperson’s Office stated that the arrests were made following raids conducted into incidents and also investigations into the complaints received.

Police also noted that that 197 raids have been carried out so far to arrest individuals suspected to have violated election laws, out of which 444 arrests have been made so far.

Furthermore, 123 perpetrators have been arrested over the 255 complaints that were lodged in correlation to the violation of election laws.

Meanwhile, the distribution of polling cards for the upcoming general elections concludes today, August 10. According to the Post Master General Rohana Abeyrathne, the distribution of polling cards will conclude at 6 p.m. today.

The Post Master General further noted that those who did not receive their polling card, could do so from their respective post office.

In more election news, today marks the deadline to obtain a temporary identity card for the 2015 parliamentary elections. Individuals who do not possess valid identity card are able to obtain the facility.

According to the Additional Elections Commissioner M.M. Mohammed, the necessary arrangements for this could be made by meeting the respective Grama Niladhari.
