Police say that an individual who protested against a group of police officers who arrived in Grandpass to conduct a drug raid has died after sustaining injuries in a fall.
The incident caused a tense situation to erupt in the area.
On Sunday morning officers of the Raiding Unit of the Colombo North Police Division arrived in Stace Road, to conduct raid. The area comes under the purview of the Grandpass Police Division.
The Police said that a woman allegedly in the possession of heroin was arrested. The Police added that a 65 year old individual who objected the arrest, died after a fall.
Thereafter a group of locals commenced a demonstration in protest against the death, subsequent to which a group including the Senior Superintendent of Police in charge of Colombo North Ajith Rohana arrived at the scene to control the situation.
The residents submitted video recorded on mobile phones during the incident, to the police. After the police gave an assurance that legal measures would be taken over this matter, the group called off the protest.
