Welikada prison officials discover phones belonging to Dematagoda Chaminda

Following a special search carried out at the prison cells by the Intelligence Unit of the Welikada Prison, officials had recovered two mobile phones from the prison cell of a suspect named Chaminda Ravee Jayanath, alias Dematagoda Chaminda, who is also the third accused in the homicide of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra.

Speaking to the media, Minister of Justice and Labour Relations Wijeyadasa Rajapakse stated that the Intelligence Unit of Prisons made the discovery on two separate occasions.

The minister further stated that the accused was transferred to segregated housing and that on the 4th, when the cells were searched by the officials, they were able to recover the mobile phones with sim cards.

He also added that an officer and a sergeant who had assisted the accused in moving the mobile phones were interdicted following an investigation.

The Minister of Justice and Labour Relations also stated that strict legal action will be taken against the breach of discipline, despite any pressure or threat.

The Minister also added that investigations are underway over a possible link between the suspects and the drive-by shooting at a crowd of supporters of Minister Ravi Karunanayake in Bloemendhal, Colombo.

Chaminda Ravee Jayanath, who was remanded for violating bail conditions in the case pertaining to the homicide of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra was produced in court once again on Thursday August 6.

Court ordered for the suspect to be further remanded until Monday August 10.
