A group of political party activists who were engaging canvasing ahead of the general election met with an accident earlier today. One youth, 22 years of age, died and four others suffered injuries as a result of the motor accident.

According to the police, the victims were supporters of Minister Duminda Dissanayake.

The remains of the deceased are currently lying at the Rambewa Hospital while the injured have been admitted to the Anuradhapura General Hospital and two were moved to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment.

According to the Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera, the van in question was driven by the OIC of the Anti Vice Squad of Anuradhapura, who is now in police custody.
