With some political parties yet to submit nominations before the deadline, the Elections Secretariat has announced that nominations or bonds will not be accepted during the weekend.
Issuing a statement, the Elections Secretariat stated that nominations for the upcoming general elections would be accepted until noon on Monday, July 13. The secretariat had requested political parties to submit nominations before Monday to avoid problems.
Meanwhile, Police have held a discussion with the Elections Commissioner on security during the election. Speaking to News 1st, Senior DIG in charge of Election Affairs Gamini Navaratne noted that it is essential that election laws are strengthened especially on the final day of submitting nominations. He added that vehicular processions and parades are strictly prohibited and that all such violations will be recorded on video and strictly dealt with.
The senior DIG noted that if a a candidate is found guilty, it would pose a serious threat to him or her.
