The operation to drive roaming wild elephants in the Puttalam area, back into the wild forest, entered its fifth day on Wednesday, July 8.

This operation was launched by ocals, wildlife officers and personnel from the defence force. According to our correspondent, 15 pachyderms were chased into the wilderness.

Meanwhile, a sixty-seven-year old died after being attacked by a wild elephant in Kalundewa, Dambulla. Police stated that the victim was attacked while attending to his manioc cultivation.

The man was reportedly attacked after attempts were made by him to chase off the elephant which encroached on to his cultivation. The victim succumbed to this injuries upon admission to the Dambulla Base hospital.
