A monk and two others have been arrested on suspicion for excavating for treasure in Thirippane, Anuradhapura.
When the group was produced before the Anuradhapura court, it was revealed that the incident did not involve an attempt to excavate for treasure but was an effort undertaken to renovate the Dagoba.
Residents too rejected the allegations levelled against them as two area residents and a monk were arrested for allegedly excavating treasure in the Vihara Maha Devi historic temple in Alisthaya in Thirippane, Anuradhapura.
According to the police, the arrested group inlcude the chief incumbent of the temple and two members of the Dayaka Sabha. They were released on bail of Rs.1500 and R. 25000 rupees after they were produced before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s court.
The members of the Dayaka Sabha stated that the excavation was carried out citing renovation activity.
