Hambantota Special Raids Unit busts sand-mining racket

Fifty two suspects and fifty three tipper trucks involved in an illegal sand-mining racket have been taken into police custody in the Palletota area.

The Office of the Police Media Spokesperson said that the arrests were made in an operation conducted last night by a group of officers of the Hambantota Special Raiding Unit headed by the Deputy DIG of Hambantota together with four other police divisions.

Police added that this sand mining racket has been going for a long period of time. It is learnt that the racket has caused harmful effects to the environment in the area.

The suspects and the vehicles seized are scheduled to be produced before the Agunakolapelessa Magistrate’s Court  on Thursday.
