The Wildlife Department says that the licences to possess wild elephants will be cancelled on June 30.

The Department noted that the new applications would called in this regard and fresh licences issued thereafter.

The Department noted further that those who have wild elephants in their custody should apply for fresh licences under this mechanism. It was further noted that a new guideline on the process to issue licenses is under construction.

With the introduction of the new guidelines, the guidelines issued in 1990 will cease to be in force and effect. The Wildlife Department noted that the proposed guidelines will address the shortcomings of the old guidelines that were issued in 1990.
