Because black cheeseburgers apparently weren’t strange enough, Burger King is selling bright red cheeseburgers in Japan.
The fast food chain will debut the “Aka Burger” — aka means red in Japanese — in stores on July 3.
Should you be brave enough to try the new offerings, there are two florescent options to choose from: the Aka Samurai Beef Burger and the Aka Samurai Chicken Burger. Both sandwiches feature red buns and, more egregiously, red cheese.
So where do the Aka burgers get their shocking hue? Tomato powder, as it turns out. The burgers will also feature a spicy red hot sauce made from hot peppers and miso.
The Aka Burger isn’t the first unusual burger to sell in Japan. In September, both Burger King and McDonald’s unveiled black burgers made from squid ink.
