Speaking at a press conference convened by the Pivithuru Hetak National Council on Tuesday, June 16, Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero warned that if the UNP does not support the 20th Amendment to the Constitution for electoral reforms, a new government will be required.
He also stated that the 20th Amendment to the Constitution needs to be passed before dissolving parliament.
Chairman of the Pivithuru Hetak National Council, Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero stated that it is amidst the greatest difficulty that they achieved victory, therefore they have to fulfill the facts that were noted as the difficult task without settling for the simple ones.
He went on to note that the 20th Amendment to the constitution should be passed and then the parliament should be dissolved. The UNP said that the parliament should be dissolved since they cannot operate a government which means – a government is created only to pass bills.
Speaking further, Venerable Athuraliye Thero emphasised on the need for the passage of the 20th Amendment to the constitution through a common consensus.
He noted that when there is a provision to build a common consensus among two major political parties what is being done is wasting time without moving on a certain agenda. The existing situation shows that the parliament is going astray and this should be changed.
In addition to this, he noted that the most important bill is the 20th Amendment to the Constitution where the preferential votes system will be abolished.
Further, he stated that a system that will please only the major parties and minority parties cannot be brought as they have to reach a consensus on the electoral system, it should not cause harm to the proportional system.
