Number 1 News provider News 1st and the People’s Channel Sirasa TV won big at the Raigam Tele Awards for excellence in media.

The Raigam Tele Awards 2014 took place on Friday, June 12, evening at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo and was presided by President Maithripala Sirisena.

Journalists, artistes and many others attended the gala awards ceremony organised for the 11th time. Speaking at the event, President Sirisena said he believes that during the short span of time that he has been president, access has been created for the people of this country to feel a sense of freedom and democracy in certain sectors.

The head of state noted that state media needs to be free of politics, adding that freedom needs to be seen by the people in reality.

”The authority of television institutions always need to operate their institution according to the visions that they have. However, in a developing country, government and non-government institutions need to be given freedom in all sectors.
