A protest was held opposite the Angunukolapelessa Police Station on the evening of Wednesday June 10  with regard to a suspect who was charged with molesting an underage child.

Police state that a report will be re-submitted to court in this regard due to the unrest which occurred on Wednesday.

The protest was held  against a suspect who was released on bail subsequent to child molestation charges.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that the child was twelve years old and is currently receiving in-house treatment at the Hambantota hospital.

The Police Media Spokesperson added that the suspect, who is an owner of a store, is alleged to have sexually abused the underage victim on numerous occasions in 2014.

Although the perpetrator was arrested and produced before courts he was later enlarged on bail.

Subsequent to the court order, residents gathered opposite the Angunkolapelessa Police and carried out the protest.

The Chairperson of the National Child Protection Authority, Natasha Balendran stated that as per usual procedure, the accused in a case of rape, is not granted bail, until the police investigation is concluded. This procedure is followed considering pressure that could be exerted on witnesses, and public unrest that may arise.

Police Media Spokesperson, ASP Ruwan Gunasekera noted that the police had submitted a B report to court, regarding the current condition of the child and the risk of public unrest.

He added that the police had made verbal and written submissions to court, seeking that bail be rejected considering these facts. In addition to this, he noted that court has decided to grant bail when lawyers for the defence submitted that the suspect is a heart patient.
