A number of senior brass of the police in Jaffna have been transferred, with immediate effect, following the case of murder and rape of a girl in Jaffna.
These officials include the Senior Suprentendant of Police of Jaffna, Suprintendent of Police of Jaffna and the HQI of Jaffna and HQI of Kayts have thus been transferred.
A hartal campaign took place in Batticaloa on Friday over the rape and murder of a student in Punguditivu, Jaffna.
The objective of this exercise was to ensure the security of the North and emphasise that no one should obstruct the activities of the Judiciary.
The Lawyers Association of Jaffna refrained from appearing for cases today The association further noted that no attorneys from the north will appear on behalf of any of the suspects and that no one should be allowed to loiter in the premises of the courts.
One hundred and thirty (130) persons have been arrested for behaving in an unruly manner during the protest staged in Jaffna, on the day the case was taken up, have been transferred to the Anuradhapura Prison.
State Minister of Defence, Ruwan Wijewardena stated that this is not something against the government or the military or to create any ethnic issue but a demonstration staged by the people who were enraged by the rape and murder of the girl.
UPFA MP, Manusha Nanayakkara stated that as a responsible opposition and as public representatives, the act of rape and murder of the school student in Jaffna, must be condemned and that they take a stance where no such incident should take place again.
Chief justice K Sri Pavan and IGP N.K Ilangakoon also visited the area to inquire into the situation surrounding the rape and murder of a school girl in Punguditivu, Jaffna.
