Anuradhapura teacher sentenced to 20 years RI

A teacher was arrested and sentenced to twenty years of rigorous imprisonment on charges of molesting an underage student in the Palugaswewa area in Anuradhapura.

The incident had taken place in Anuradapura either on  July 15, 2006 or on a closer date.

North Central Province High Court Judge Dammika Ganepola who ordered that 13 years of rigorous imprisonment be given for the first charge while another 7 years if rigorous imprisonment be given for the second charge, decided to combine the punishment and give 20 years of rigorous imprisonment.

The judge further said that a sum of Rs. five million be provided as compensation to the victim failing which, the defendant’s prison sentence will be extended by one more year.

This prison sentence was handed down to a resident of Maradankadawala, Palugaswewa.
