On Friday (May 15th) Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa signed the blueprint of the 19th amendment to the constitution, validating the amendment. Deputy General Secretary of Parliament Neil Iddawala said Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa signed the blueprint of the 19th Amendment to the constitution at around 09:10 am in Parliament.
Thereby the 19th amendment to the constitution will be implemented in full with the exception of 6 clauses.
Clauses pertaining to the time period regarding the dissolution of parliament, amendment made to the judicial services commission and the presentation of emergency bills will come in to effect after the next parliamentary elections.
The 19th Amendment to the constitution is aimed at pruning the powers of the executive Presidency and was passed with a majority on the 28th of April.
