A group visited the Wilpattu Forest Reserve on Friday (May 15th) which has become a center of controversy due to deforestation and allegations of illegal constructions. Monks of the National Sangha Council and Environmental Experts were among those who engaged in this visit.
The group first engaged in a Sathyagraha Campaign close to the Malwathu Oya Bridge located on the border of the Forest Reserve and later visited the area. Steps were taken to plant tree saplings in the area where illegal construction had taken place.
General Secretary of National Sangha Council Venerable Matara Ananda Sagara Thero said that the destruction of this forest reserve has been taking for quite some time adding that top-tier Government officials must take immediate steps to rectify this issue.
According to our correspondent another group of individuals attempted to obstruct the monks and environmentalists while they were returning from their activities. However the police intervened to control the situation.
