Galgamuwa residents demand solution to Human-Elephant conflict (Watch video)

Locals from Galgamuwa launched a protest this morning demanding a solution to prevent wild elephant attacks on their villages. The locals convened at the New Herathgama Junction on the Anuradhapura – Padeniya road and commenced the protest.

Several villages in the area have been battered by Wild Elephant attacks for over a period of time. Despite the construction of a electric fence in the area, locals lament that poor maintenance has resulted in the fence malfunctioning.

News 1st made an inquiry in this regard from the Wildlife Reserve Officer of Galgamuwa , I.N.G.Seneviratne in this regard and he noted that he has informed the Divisional Secretariat of Galgamuwa on the paths used by the elephants. He added that thereby it is the responsibility of the Divisional Secretariat to take measure to prevent elephant attacks on villages.

Commenting on the matter, District Secretariat of Galgamuwa Priyangani Pathiraja said that she cannot provide an answer without visiting the areas that are at risk of wild elephant attacks.
