Army Commando who breached Presidential security further remanded (Watch video)

The Army Commando who is said to have attended a meeting of President Maithripala Sirisena in Angunukolapelessa recently armed with a firearm was further remanded until the 19th of May.

He was returned to remand custody after he was produced before the Agunukolapelessa Magistrate.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that the suspect Corporal is attached to the security detail of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The Police Media Spokesperson said that the Corporal had attended the meeting in question along with MP Namal Rajapaksa.

The Corporal was arrested and was produced before the Agunukolapelessa Magistrate, two lawyers including MP Namal Rajapaksa appeared on behalf of him.

UPFA MP Attorney-at-Law Namal Rajapaksa speaking to the media stated that everyone who was present at the occasion was aware that the suspect did not carry a firearm. He notes that according to the Police the suspect had forcibly arrived at the Police station to provide a statement and for that he was arrested. The Parliamentarian notes that if there was a breach in the security provided to President Maithripala Sirisena the officer who lapsed in his duty should be punished first.

Meanwhile Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera noted that if the suspect in question had not been carrying a firearm he would not have been arrested by the CID. ASP Gunasekara also added that there is clear evidence that he arrived at the location with a pistol.

Assistant Superintendent of Police of the CID Shani Abeysekera presenting facts to court said that members of the Presidential Security Division who served on that day are still in active service.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera noted that the CID will be will be carrying out a separate investigation to ascertain if there was a breach of security protocol on the part of the Officers of the Presidential Security Division.
