Colombo Chief Magistrate, Gihan Pilapitiya issued orders to the Colombo Crimes division on Monday (May 11th), to arrest of UPFA Western Provincial Councillor, Nawzer Fowzie and present him before Court.
The order was issued following the consideration of a police report which looked into an alleged incident where the Western Provincial Councillor is said to have threatened a businessman with a firearm three years ago.
The Magistrate reprimanded the Police for not taking prompt action with regard to this incident. The Police in response stated that they were unable to carry out the arrest as the Attorney General’s department failed to provide the legal advice necessary in this regards.
Thereafter the magistrate emphasized that awaiting legal advice is not necessary to carry out an arrest, after inquiries have been made into an individual who has committed an offence.
