The Opposition Leader of the Kotte Municipal Council engaged in a demonstration on Thursday, (May 07th) citing that the Mayor was connected to a number of corrupt activities and irregularities.
Tensions gripped the Municipal Council premises with the arrival of the Mayor at the location. The sitting of the Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte Municipal Council also took place on Thursday, (May 07th). Subsequent to the days sessions, Opposition Leader Sugath Appuhami commenced his demonstration by climbing on to a pillar at the Main Gate of the Municipal Council premises.
Sugath Appuhami stated that there are nearly 17 corruption related cases against the Mayor, he went onto note that even though complaints had been filed with the bribery commission, no action has been taken .
During the demonstration , a group of Councilors headed by the Mayor arrived at the location and took measures to remove the Opposition Leader from the premises.
He went on to note that these things are happening because he opposed the destruction of the Municipal Council. The issue is 200M rupees have been spent on the construction of the city but yet there is not even a car park. This is the only opportunity available to speak of this matter.
Sugath Appuhami speaking further charged that the Mayor climbed on to the gate and dragged him down to the ground and kicked him. He also charged that the Mayors security personnel also assaulted him and as a result suffered injuries to his head and hip.
Mayor of Kotte Janaka Ranawaka responding to the allegation noted that that he asked the opposition leader to get down from the gate and as he was stepping down he fell to the ground. Mayor Ranawaka charged that Sugath Appuhami staged the protest to cover-up his actions where he had evaded paying Rs. 300,000 to the Municipal council for a building that was constructed.
Opposition Leader of the Kotte Municipal Council Sugath Appuhami who was injured in the incident was admitted to the accident ward of the National Hospital on Thursday, (May 07th) evening.
Deputy Minister of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs Dr. Harsha de Silva noted that this is first time such an assault took place in a municipal council. He noted that this Govt. was built on the policy of good governance, therefore any corrupt act will not be swept under the rug. The Deputy minister also noted that a request has been made to the IGP to implement the law independently.
Opposition Leader of the Kotte Municipal Council Sugath Appuhami had filed a complaint with the Welikada Police citing that he was assaulted by the Mayor of Kotte.
Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekerea stated that the Mayor of Kotte Janaka Ranawaka too had filed a complaint citing that he was assaulted by the Opposition Leader of Kotte.
In addition another Councilor had filed a complaint against the Oppositon Leader for obstruction of duty.
