Former Director of the UNESCO International Programme of Development communication, Wijayananda Jayaweera says that democratic governance cannot function without press freedom.
He made this statement while addressing a media briefing convened by the Free Media Association in line with World Press Freedom Day.
Former Director of International Programme of Development Communication, UNESCO Wijayananda Jayaweera expressed the following views:
”With the sovereignty that we have, we appointed a government through an election. Elections are a part of sovereignty. Although we appoint a government once in every five years, we must constantly be in an agreement with the government. We need information in order to keep that agreement going. And if there is a certain level of asymmetry in that information, in the sense if we do not know what the government is doing, then it becomes difficult to stay in that agreement as citizens. Then the media intervenes to wipe out that asymmetry in the information. On top of that democracy and democratic governance cannot function without press freedom.”
