Kazakhstan president re-elected for fifth consecutive term

Kazakhstan election officials announced on the 28th of April, that the incumbent, Nursultan A. Nazarbayev of the Nur Otan Party, won his fifth successive term, securing 97.7% of the vote. The two opposing candidates, Abelgazi Kasainov and Turgun Syzdykov, got 0.7% and 1.6% of the votes respectively.

The Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan stated that the turn out was higher than 95%. The exit poll took place at more than 550 polling stations across the country, including 312 stations in cities and 238 in rural areas. The Chairman of the elections commission stated the landmark victory is an “expression of civil society, electoral activeness and political responsibility”.

Foreign election monitors have stated that the elections were conducted in a fair and transparent manner.

The Honorary Consul for Kazakhstan in Sri Lanka stated that the resounding victory denotes faith that people have in His Excellency the President, Nursultan Nazarbayev, and believes the country will reach new heights under his fifth term.
