Large stocks of vegetables have been found being disposed at the Dambulla Economic Centre.

Farmers have stated that over the past few days prior to the Sinhala and Hindu New Year, their harvests have been cast aside. According to the farmers, the inability to clear stocks, hurt their income specially after paying taxes and transportation fees.

Traders have stated that the lack of sales is due to the inadequate knowledge of farmers.

U.R Dayanandasiri, Chairman of the Trade Union at the Dambulla Economic Centre said that there are crops fetching higher prices being grown all across the country. He further added that this trend will continue every year and will lead to excess stock.

He further added that farmers are not aware of the market situation and will continue cultivating excess crops.  He finally added that if the authorities do not take action, discussions will have to be held between the traders and farmers and that the excess stock is now the food for animals.
