A tense situation erupted in the North Western Provincial Council over the summoning of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Bribery Commission.

A debate arose based on a statement made by Chief Minister of the North Western Province, Dayasiri Jayasekara at the commencement of the meeting.

Provincial Councillors from the government carried placards and commenced protesting in the middle of the council thereby wreaking havoc.

Chairman of the North Western Provincial Council Dharmasiri Dassanayake left the chamber with the mace during the demonstration

Our correspondent noted that the group of provincial councillors  continued with the protest for ten minutes.

CM Dayasiri Jayasekara said that they can see the manner in which Ranil Wickremesinghe who took oaths and pledged to re-establish good governance, is running the government, adding that he is violating  the rule of law.

Speaking further, he said that the Prime Minister has appointed a one-sided team to investigate corruption which took place at the Central Bank where 41 billion was lost within 2-3 hours.

The opposition too convened a media briefing after which the government provincial councillors staged a protest in close proximity to the area.

Opposition Leader J.C. Alawathuwala said that when they are trying to implement what the people want, and what they suggested, they start protesting. This has now spread to provincial councils.

Meanwhile, North Western Provincial Councillor Prasanna Shamal Senarath said that they are all major rogues and extortionists who stole this country for 20 years. That is why it is not easy to stop a protest with regard to catching these rogues. He said that this country will never get better without chasing these thieves away.
