In an interview with The New Indian Express former secretary of defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa has called on President Maithripala Sirisena to join hand with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to give Sri Lanka a “functioning government.”

Rajapaksa went on to note that President Sirisena has the ability to call for early parliamentary elections and appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa as his Prime Minister. Gotabhaya believes that this will allow the country to get back on its feet.

Speaking to P.K. Balachandran of The New Indian Express the former defence secretary had claimed that Sri Lankans want Mahinda Rajapaksa in power, adding that support for the former President had grown beyond the 5.8 million votes he got in the January Presidential Election.

In his interview, the former defence Ssecretary claims that there is no functioning government as Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike and several other ministers are vying for power within the present government. He goes on to state that all economic development projects initiated by the Rajapaksa regime have come to a standstill and that over 100,000 workers have been rendered jobless as a result of this.

Rajapaksa claims that civil servants are frightened to make decisions as officials are currently being investigated by the government for alleged procedural lapses. Gotabhaya Rajapaksa warns that if this trend is allowed to continue, the entire economy would collapse and it would be difficult to put the country back on its feet.

Responding to the corruption charges levelled against him the former defence secretary denied the allegations as baseless, stating that he had earned money for the country through his projects.
