Thirty five (35) people have been evacuated to safer ground following an earth slip near the Hamilton Estate in Lakshapana, Maskeliya.
Police say the earth-slip occurred with heavy rain in the area on Wednesday evening, near a line of homes.
Police added that there were no injuries reported and that some of the evacuated individuals are being housed at a Hindu temple, while others are at the homes of their relatives.
Meanwhile, seven spill gates of the Udawalawe Reservoir have been opened with the onset of incessant rain.
The Assistant Director at the Disaster Management Centre Pradeep Kodippili said that, as a result, residents should exercise caution when using water from the Walawe River, which runs below the reservoir.
The Met Department meanwhile, in its forecast issued on Thursday morning, predicted heavy rains accompanied by thundershowers in several places across the country.
