The final rites of the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thero are to be carried out with full state honours at the Kandy Police grounds on the afternoon of Sunday, April 12.
The body of the most Venerable Thero, who passed away at a hospital in Singapore last Wednesday, is currently placed in the Upali Pravara Memorial Hall at the Asgiriya Maha Viharaya for the general public to pay their last respects.
According to our correspondent, large crowds have gathered in Kandy since dawn to pay their last respects to the remains of the most Venerable Thero.
The government has declared Sunday, April 12, a national day of mourning.
As a mark of respect, the Presidential Secretariat has requested groceries and government companies to hoist yellow flags.
The body of the Most Ven. Thero’s body will be taken in a vehicle at 1.00 p.m from the Asgiri Maha Viharaya to the police grounds and in the process a 17 gun-salute will be performed.
There will also be 500 Army personnel, 250 Navy personnel and 250 soldiers from the Air Force. An armed force of 1000 personnel will be marching on either sides of the funeral motorcade .
There will be a floral tribute by air at 5.00 p.m. and before the funeral pyre takes place there will be another 17 gun salute.
The Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thero was born on March 17 ,1930 in Udugama became the Mahanayaka in the Asgiri sector on December 13th, 1999 and passed away aged 85 years.
