President Maithripala Sirisena says that even elephant calves were not given the opportunity to live freely during the previous regime.
The President expressed these views during an event held to mark the 47th anniversary of the State Timber Coorporation.
During the event individuals who had completed 30 years of service at the State Timber Coorporation and other retired officers were felicitated.
The President stated that during the previous regime deforestation received state patronage, adding that ruthless businessman ripped apart the natural resources in the Sri Lanka’s rain-forest.
He went onto note that forest in the north and eastern provinces escaped this for sometime due to the war.
