A Sathosa warehouse in Kelaniya was sealed after raw rice suspected to be unsuitable for consumption was found in storage.

Biyagama public health inspectors who raided the storage facility following a tip-off, said they found 10,700 metric tonnes of imported raw rice.

They noted that some of the rice had already been distributed but that samples of the rice in storage were taken to determine if it met safety standards.

A report in this regard is expected to be presented to a court magistrate.

UPDATE:

A communique issued by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce states that reports on the discovered 10,700 metric tonnes of rice which are unfit for consumption, are false and misleading.

The communique notes that two tonnes of rice had been stored separately at the storage facility and that this stock had been earmarked for disposal.

The statement reads that the stocks should have been disposed of following the survey, adding that it had been stored as the Board of Survey has not been appointed.
