A public rally urging that Mahinda Rajapaksa be named Prime Minister of the United People’s Freedom Alliance took place in Ratnapura on Thursday.

A number of Sri Lanka Freedom Party parliamentarians were present at this rally.

Today, Thursday, March 26, was the third meeting being held under the theme Victory achieved at stake – Band together to overcome the national challenges.

SLFP MPs including Bandula Gunwardena, T.B. Ekanayake, Ranjith Zoysa and Chief Minister of the Western Province Prasanna Ranatunga and representatives from provincial councils and local government institutions were present for this rally.

Although Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was not present, he had sent a message to the rally.

Speaking at the rally, UPFA Western Provincial Councillor, Udaya Gammanpila stated that 29 MPs of the Sri Lanka Freedom Alliance has cast aside the ban of the party and have risen on to this stage. They wish to see the party achieve victory. This not a task of four parties of the Alliance, but a task of a majority of the SLFP.

Chief Minister of the Western Province, Prasanna Ranatunga  expressed the following views:

We are not against President Maithripala Sirisena. At this historic meeting what we request from you is to make Mahinda Rajapaksa the Prime Minister of this country. In 1994 when Chandrika was against our Party Leader, the Late Sirimavo Bandaranaike ……. and when we brought in Chandrika to make the party victorious , the leadership was provided from Gampaha. However, what happened afterward? Chandrika won, all those leaders with Madame Sirimavo came to Madame Chandrika and told tales against the former and destroyed them. Today, some of those leaders who have banded with President Maithripala Sirisena are doing the same thing.

UPFA MP, Bandula Gunawardena also shared his views:

He said that for the first time in the history of independent Sri Lanka, a Singapore National named Arjuna Mahendran has been appointed to the place where the money is. This Singapore national has come and dropped the country’s interest to its single digits. When the 100 days goes by, the interest rate is in two digits so that the benefits can be given to their relatives. The treasury bonds have incurred a loss in billions to the country. In simply 21 days the loss the treasury has incurred was 30 billion rupees.

UPFA MP, Vasudeva Nanayakkara was also present at the rally. He stated that there was no parliamentary election. There was only a presidential election. A prime minister and government can be appointed through a parliamentary election. A minority was appointed by the president’s power. That is when this government needs to be toppled.

While the MP was addressing the gathering, MP Kumara Welgama joined rally.
