Minister of Food Security, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera says that the Government has decided to temporarily suspend the debts of small- and medium-scale rice mill owners, whose mills are currently closed down.
He said that a new programme has been implemented to re-operate the closed down mills.
According to the Ministry of Food Security there are almost 14,000 rice mill spread across the country and 80 percent of those mills have been closed down/ After taking into account the grievances faced by the mill owners, Minister Perera said that a concession will be provided for loans obtained by the mill owners from State Banks.
Under this programme, the government has planned to release new loans for these mill owners to re-open mills and continue business. The minister went on to say that the new programme go into effect next week.
