Addressing a media briefing on Wednesday the Sri Lanka Freedom Party said that it is against the tabling of the proposed amendment to the constitution as an Urgent Bill. Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva said if the amendments to the constitution are tabled in Parliament as an Urgent Bill, the Party will have to take a stern decision.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party, under the patronage of the Opposition Leader convened a media briefing in Colombo today to explain their stance on the proposed amendments to the constitution. Nimal Siripala de Silva noted that the SLFP is ready to abolish the powers vested in the President to dissolve parliament. He also noted that the party is ready to abolish the president’s legal immunity during office.
Nimal Siripala de Silva also noted that the electoral system must be changed before an election.
Commenting on Minister John Amaratunga, the opposition leader stated that those in the UNP are meddling in the activities of the police and urged the President to change the Minister of Public Order.
