Outgoing High Commissioner of Pakistan to Sri Lanka, Qasim Qureshi says that the diplomatic relationship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan is not based on any strategic compulsion but on an association of choice.

He made this statement at the inaugural session of the International Seminar on Historical Economic, Military and Cultural links between Pakistan and Sri Lanka held in Colombo on Thursday morning.

High Commissioner of Pakistan to Sri Lanka, Qasim Qureshi stated that during the 1971 war between Pakistan and India, Pakistan had a special need to fly an aircraft to east Pakistan and west Pakistan and over flights over India were forbidden. So, despite all the pressure the Indian government put on Sri Lanka, they allowed the Pakistan aircraft to land at Colombo and go over to Dhaka. This is something Pakistan (we) never forgot.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Urban Development, Rauff Hakeem said that Muslims in Sri Lanka today are at the crossroads where they have got to grapple with the latest convulsions that has come about as a result of some degree of militant brand in the faith of the majority.
