A public rally urging the government to call for a general election took place in Maharagama.

This rally was organised by the JVP.

Speaking at the event, JVP Politburo Member, K.D. Lalkantha stated that the reasons of entering politics is to obtain pension, and to obtain this pension they (politicians) only need to go to parliament on 20 days and stay in parliament for five minutes.

Leader of the JVP, Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that on January 8 the people’s mandate was given not only against Rajapaksa but also against his government. They (national government ) want to create a government together with the group that was defeated. They say that there will be 50 ministers and 50 deputy ministers. Out of that 50, 25 will be for the UNP and 25 for the SLFP.

He went on to note that Ranil Wickremesinghe has no public mandate; if a government exceeds the 100-day time frame, Ranil Wickremesinghe must step down from the post of Prime Minister.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake also stressed to dissolve parliament on  April 23 and call for an election for the people to give a new mandate.
