Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva convened a media briefing to elaborate on political issues that have arisen.

Opposition Leader, Nimal Siripala de Silva expressed the following views:

The SLFP Committee has proposed that the preferential vote system be abolished and a responsible MP be appointed to a seat. In addition it was proposed to abolish the executive presidency. We proposed that both of these needs to be implemented at once. We do not agree to abolish the Executive Presidency first and later to change the electoral system.

Question : Do you agree for a National Government?

Nimal Siripala de Silva: There are views within the party that some persons need to go for it. There are some who are not in favour of it. We have not reached a final decision as yet.

Question : Who will be the Prime Ministerial Candidate?

Nimal Siripala de Silva: I am working for the party and am not seeking positions. If I am able to win , I will get it. If someone else can win, he will get it. Who knows? We cannot say who will win or lose.

Question : Will disciplinary action be taken on the MPs who took part in the rally in Nugegoda?

Nimal Siripala de Silva: The SLFP did not impose any sanctions on anyone. As a party we did not attend it. Did we go there? We cannot because we did not have an invitation. None of them can be the prime minister. Therefore, we all need to remove that prime ministerial dream from our heads.
