Bandarawela, Welimada, Puhulpola residents join Uma Oya protest (Watch Report)

A protest was launched opposite the Uva Provinicial council demanding the immediate cessation of the Uma Oya project.

Our correspondent said that the Badulla – Passara road was obstructed owing to the protest.

The protest which was organised by the Organisation to safeguard Uma Oya saw the participation of residents of several areas including Bandarawela, Welimada, Puhulpola and Makulella.

Chief Minister of the Uva Province, Harin Fernando arrived at the location where the protest was staged.

Samantha Vidyaratne from the Organisation to Safeguard Uma Oya stated that the wells that were in existence for over 70 to 80 years do not have water anymore and though the fields have been watered the water does not stagnate in the fields. He also added that the Chaithyas in the Temples are cracked.

He further said that the politicians have made false promises and that the people were conned by those promises made through the Uma Oya Project.

Meanwhile, the News1st Gammadda programme which is scheduled to be recorded in Bandarawela will highlight the hardships faced by the people due to the Uma Oya Project .
