Police officers remanded over death of Sooriyawewa suspect

Six police officers who were arrested over the death of a suspect while in police custody, have been remanded.

The Police Media Unit stated that the Tangalle Crimes Investigation Init had arrested the officers at around 4:30 on Tuesday morning, adding that those arrested were a police sergeant, and five constables.

The victim was arrested on February 19 for the alleged possession of illegal liquor in the Sooriyawewa area.

Hee had been admitted to the sooriyawewa and hambantota hospitala after falling ill on that night.

However, he passed away on Sunday evening while in hospital. Relatives of the deceased, speaking to News1st alleged that the police assaulted the suspect in an inhumane manner after his arrest, which resulted in his death.

The victim was 32-year-old Liyanaratchchi Samantha, a resident of Sooriyawewa.
