A demonstration against the Uma Oya multi-purpose project was held in the Bandarawela town on Friday.
People claimed that their water springs have dried up already as a result of this project.
News 1st’s Mayura Kalansooriya and Ashen Tharaka, visited the scene to ascertain the true situation behind the Uma Oya Project.
The Uma Oya multi-purpose project, was first proposed in 1991, with the intention being to construct two reservoirs across the Uma Oya and the Mathetilla Oya in Puhulpola and Dayaramba, for power generation and water supply.
However, when it was initially proposed, the project was rejected, on the basis of protests that it would take away the people’s right to free water and because of technical flaws in the project plan.
