President Maithripala Sirisena met a group of public officials from the district, at the Thopaweva Maha Vidyalaya Sports Ground in Polonnaruwa.

Speaking at the event, the  President said that the pursuit of abolishing the Executive Presidency and thereby doing away with its unlimited authority, and granting further authority to the Parliament is currently ongoing.

He added that he engaged in a discussion on this the other day and suggested that his duration in office, which is six years, be reduced to four.

He went on to note that the Constitutional Expert Committee and Political Leadership Council which convened at the meeting, disagreed with his suggestion of four years, stating that holding of elections quadrennially is not favourable. But upon his insistence they have agreed to reduce it to five years.

The President further said that he will go home in five years instead of six.
