Official government data shows an 8.7 percent increase in foreign remittances from Sri Lankan expatriates in the first ten months of the year.
Foreign remittances from Sri Lankan workers abroad is one of the primary sources of vital foreign exchange for Sri Lanka. These workers contributed $5.236 billion in foreign exchange to the Sri Lankan economy from January to October 2013 and Rs. 5.69 billion in the same time frame this year.
Nearly 1.7 million Sri Lankan citizens are currently working abroad in various countries across the globe, about 1.2 million of whom are employed in the Middle East.
